| Abstract |
As generative artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in adolescents’ learning environments and daily lives, parents play a critical role in guiding their children’s responsible use of AI technologies. Grounded in parental mediation theory, this study examines how four parental mediation strategies, including active mediation, restrictive mediation, co-use, and supervision influence their risk perception and cognitive development via AI literacy. Drawing on a sample of 1,429 high school students from three schools in southern China, the results revealed that active mediation positively predicted adolescents’ AI literacy, whereas restrictive mediation and supervision negatively predicted AI literacy. Adolescents’ AI literacy further negatively predicted their content risk perception and positively predicted their cognitive development. Multi-group analysis showed that the effect of active mediation on AI literacy was significantly stronger among adolescents with higher parent-child closeness. Furthermore, latent profile analysis identified four distinct parental mediation profiles: active navigators, balanced supporters, disengaged bystanders, and intensive controllers. Compared to disengaged bystanders, intensive controllers were associated with significantly lower AI literacy, whereas active navigators fostered higher AI literacy, better cognitive development, and lower content risk perception. These findings advance parental mediation theory in the AI era and offer practical implications for family education and the cultivation of adolescents’ digital literacy.
