| Abstract |
As smartphones become a social infrastructure, their impact on well-being has increasingly attracted attention and discussion. For the impoverished populations struggling with happiness, does smartphone use help improve their well-being? This study uses data from a 2019 survey of 1,673 relocated households under the poverty alleviation relocation program in 16 counties across 8 provinces in China to investigate the relationship between smartphone use and the subjective well-being of the relocated population from four dimensions: smartphone ownership, internet use via smartphone, frequency of internet use, and intensity of internet use. The empirical results indicate that smartphone use is negatively related to the subjective well-being of the relocated population, with higher internet use frequency and longer daily usage correlating with lower subjective well-being in this group. In addition, based on the characteristics of the relocated population, this study further analyzes the influencing mechanism from two perspectives: subjective trust levels and material emphasis. The results suggest that smartphone use is related to lower subjective trust levels and greater emphasis on income among the relocated population, which in turn leads to a decrease in subjective well-being. The study reveals the existence of “the other side of the coin,” reflects on technological optimism, and provides inspiration for further exploration of residents’ happiness. |
