| Abstract |
Academic autonomy has long been a catalyst for intellectual self-reflection. Existing research predominantly explores how dominant factors such as politics or economics shape knowledge production. However, there is limited literature examining society’s impact on this process, and even less empirical research investigating the dynamic interplay between academia and society. This paper employs the “2018 Professor Hu Angang Incident” as a case study to illuminate the consequences of society leveraging public opinion as a tool to influence knowledge production. In 2018, Professor Hu Angang faced calls from Tsinghua alumni to resign from his positions following his assertion that “China has surpassed the United States.” Using synthetic control methods, this study analyzes the causal effects of this incident on Professor Hu’s post-event knowledge production and dissemination efficiency. The findings reveal that while the incident did not significantly reduce Professor Hu’s research productivity, it substantially diminished his academic influence, with this negative effect exhibiting a trend of continuous intensification. The study challenges the conventional view of society as a passive actor in its interactions with academia, arguing that society can play a more proactive role in supervising scholars through public opinion. Such oversight can help uphold the principle of value neutrality and encourage the academic community to produce research grounded in empirical evidence, rather than blindly aligning with non-academic factors such as political agendas. |
